Evolution of secondary software product businesses: Momentum of concurrent enterprising

2005

A growing part of commercial software production is provided by the so-called secondary software industry, involving both software products and services offered by other industries than the actual software industry, i.e. the primary industry. We have been investigating the evolution of businesses in the secondary software industry in two phases, first by developing a framework to analyse the change of host industries from closed and vertical to open and horizontal especially in terms of software products. Secondly, we have studied a set of selected industries in a pivotal era called the momentum of concurrent enterprising in this paper. The key finding is: the value creation is moving towar…

Conceptual Differences Among Functional Size Measurement Methods

2007

The paper focuses on measuring and assessing the relation of adaptive maintenance process and quality of open source software (OSS). A framework for assessing adaptive maintenance process is proposed and applied. The framework consists of six sub- processes. Five OSSs with considerable number of releases have been studied empirically. Their main evolutionary and quality characteristics have been measured. The main results of the study are the following:. 1) Software maintainability is affected mostly by the activities of the 'analysis' maintenance sub-process. 2) Software testability is affected by the activities of all maintenance sub-processes. 3) Software reliability is affected mostly b…

Evaluating Model-Driven Development Claims with Respect to Quality: A Family of Experiments

2021

[EN] Context: There is a lack of empirical evidence on the differences between model-driven development (MDD), where code is automatically derived from conceptual models, and traditional software development method, where code is manually written. In our previous work, we compared both methods in a baseline experiment concluding that quality of the software developed following MDD was significantly better only for more complex problems (with more function points). Quality was measured through test cases run on a functional system. Objective: This paper reports six replications of the baseline to study the impact of problem complexity on software quality in the context of MDD. Method: We con…

iOS Applications Testing

2015

<p class="R-AbstractKeywords"><span lang="EN-US">Mobile applications conquer the world, but iOS devices hold the major share of tablets market among the corporate workers. This study aims to identify the aspects (i.e. features and/ or limitations) that influence the testing of the native iOS applications. The aspects related to general mobile applications testing are identified through the systematic literature review of academic sources. iOS applications testing aspects are identified through the review of non-academic (multivocal) literature sources. The identified aspects are merged and discussed in detail using the reviewed sources and based on the author’s professional expe…

UML-Based Reliability Modeling of Network Services, a UDP Echo Service Case Study

2009

In the paper, we discuss state space reliability modeling formalism of distributed systems and services compliant with UML metamodel. Behavior of modeled application system we describe in terms of states. Service generation process we represent as a sequence of application system states. State space approach allows us to define dependence between application system components via dependence between components states and states input, output parameters. Reliability of application system component we define for each simply action state. Reliability of a service we express by components reliability in states determined by service generation process. As an example, we analyze reliability of cli…

Retrieving Open Source Software Licenses

2006

Open Source Software maintenance and reuse require identifying and comprehending the applied software licenses. This paper first characterizes software maintenance, and open source software (OSS) reuse which are particularly relevant in this context. The information needs of maintainers and reusers can be supported by reverse engineering tools at different information retrieval levels. The paper presents an automated license retrieval approach called ASLA. User needs, system architecture, tool features, and tool evaluation are presented. The implemented tool features support identifying source file dependencies and licenses in source files, and adding new license templates for identifying l…

QUALITY SYSTEM FOR PRODUCTION SOFTWARE (QSPS): AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF PRODUCTION SOFTWARE

2013

A quality system for production software should be part of the quality management system of an organization and can be expressed as objectives in the form of processes, procedures, tools and responsibilities, designed and developed to fulfil the quality requirements. These usually are addressing the customers (external or internal), compliance with standards (effectiveness) waste reduction and better use of resources (efficiency) for continual improvement. Such systems are designed according to the requirements of the standards for quality management, software engineering and information security. Quality systems themselves could not provide all necessary means for driving the organization…

Smart Technologies in Software Life Cycle

2007

In software life cycle models traditionally the main attention is being paid to the software development, including requirement gathering (specification), design, implementation and testing. Less research is devoted to the system maintenance and operation despite the fact that these aspects take up the main part of the duration of a successful system. In the paper smart technologies are being analysed - architectural designs and software components which using meta information on system and its usage conditions are able to solve efficiently the problems of maintenance and usage: data quality and performance monitoring, software flexibility and testability, context dependant user interface. …

Eliciting Information on the Vulnerability Black Market from Interviews

2010

Threats to computing prompted by software vulnerabilities are abundant and costly for those affected. Adding to this problem is the emerging vulnerability black markets (VBMs), since they become places to trade malware and exploits. VBMs are discussed based on information derived from interviews with security researchers. The effort is enriched by further examination of documents surrounding the disclosure of four selected vulnerabilities cases. The result suggests that the VBMs is bifurcated into two distinct parts; the skilled-hacker and the script-kiddie VBMs with a possible link between them, where the latter become places to sell malware or exploit kits after the zero day vulnerability…

What happens when software developers are (un)happy

2017

The growing literature on affect among software developers mostly reports on the linkage between happiness, software quality, and developer productivity. Understanding happiness and unhappiness in all its components -- positive and negative emotions and moods -- is an attractive and important endeavor. Scholars in industrial and organizational psychology have suggested that understanding happiness and unhappiness could lead to cost-effective ways of enhancing working conditions, job performance, and to limiting the occurrence of psychological disorders. Our comprehension of the consequences of (un)happiness among developers is still too shallow, being mainly expressed in terms of developmen…
